| "Cool Cafe!" |
09 Jun 2010 |
| Must confess that I spent a whole lot more time there just relaxing rather than eating. All I tried was a cold coffee and bottled water! To my defence this was supposed to be an after lunch meeting with less eating and more talking.
The place is super neat and very french indeed. Service was prompt although it took some explaining for the waiter to finally get what I wanted a bit different in my cold coffee. I know, how complicated can a cold coffee get?
My other gripe is the lack of ceiling fans or just more fans. There are couple giant fans that rotate and manage to blow off your table settings, its more of an annoyance than comfort.
The menu looked very interesting, lots of sandwiches and snack food. Wish I had the space to try some. The decor is subtle and charming. The place was packed and everyone seemed to be having a great time.
Would love to return for a meal and some more cold coffee. |

| "A great addition to the family!" |

| A sister concern of Bhagat Tarachand, this place is definitely a welcome addition to the family.
Rich and heavy food, the way you want it to be. The place is a bit noisy and crowded, but once you are at your table, its easy to forget the downsides. Its highly affordable too. My favorites are the Veg. Chilli Milli Shorba, Veg diwani Handi, dal fry and butter chapati. The chaas is pretty good thirst quencher too.
A must try! |

| "Disappointing!" |

| I wish I could say I was bowled over by how great and cool Chor Bizzare was, but that was not to be. We arrived for lunch a bit late and restaurant was somewhat empty apart from a couple tables. One of the tables sat huge group of giddy girls probably from a nearby call center. Their table was so loud it really interfered with enjoying our meal, but I guess everyone is entitled to have a good time.
We were quickly seated and even received some complimentary snack for the table. Our drink orders were filled quickly too. But then began the wait, first to get a waiter to take our order and then for the food to arrive.
We decided to go ala carte rather than the buffet. We though we would minimize the options and be able to get out of there and back to work soon. Big mistake! It was like the kitchen had closed down and our order required Chefs to be hired and stoves to be lit. It took them a good 35 minutes or more for any of our food to arrive without any apologies or explanation.
The food was pretty good, I must say. Not the best I have had but still recommendation worthy.
The decor, which is much talked about, is indeed unique. A lot of great antique pieces make up the restaurant. The car doubling as a buffet table was really cool. Still I expected some cohesiveness in the deliberate mix-match. Individually all the pieces did impress but together there was something missing.
So go when you know service will be quick, you will be allowed to have a discussion on your table and probably try the buffet instead! |

| "Delhi's Hidden gem!" |

| Located smack in the middle of the scrap market, the restaurant seems like a easily passable one. But don't be fooled by its dirty surroundings and run of the mill exteriors. Khalsa is a well kept local secret, one reserved for the adventurous and guts of steel!
I did have my arm twisted a bit before I agreed to go here, and I am so glad I did. We arrived there around 12 pm when it seemed like the restaurant was just about getting going. There were already a few hungry diners at the tables waiting for the kitchen to churn out their favourites.
The inside is less impressive than the outside. We took a rickety staircase up to the second floor to sit in their "air conditioned" section. My host did the ordering, a couple plates of Barra Kabab, a few rotis and raw seasoned onions. The Barra kabab looks like an unsavoury dry lamb chop until you bite into it. The flavour is so delicate and the meat so tender. You would not expect it and it is super tasty. Until then I had expected an over-seasoned and masala laden chop. We went through plate after plate, just could not have enough.
When we decided to stop ourselves, my host insisted I try yet another specialty of this place - Dana. Now your Cholesterol might just shoot up hearing the description of the dish but here goes anywhere - Dana is liver wrapped in fat and grilled! I am not fond of liver, but boy was this good.
Khalsa is know around town for its Barra Kabab and Dana. But its location and way downscale ambiance keeps a lot of people away. There are plenty of great restaurants in Delhi but none until now have been planning a trip so that I can have this kabab.
Love it! |

| "Tradiontal food in a modern setting" |

| Waiters screaming orders, the loud clang of metal plates, overfilled ladles of sambhar spilling on your table, the crunch of dosa bits under your feet .. all the hallmarks of a traditional Chennai dosa and idly place are missing here. It is somewhat welcome although foreign to be eating such good authentic local breakfast food in a place like ID. The place is contemporary right down to the silverware. The food is great and keeps me and a lot of others coming back for more. I have generally experienced good service although I have heard from others that it can be spotty. A must visit! |
