The Hole in the Wall Cafe

"Wish this was closer to home!" 13 Sep 2010
Hole In the Wall Cafe - of course, its a little more than a hole in the wall and can seat around 25 if you can really pack yourselves in. This place is great for breakfasts which on weekends lasts well into brunch hours and beyond. They also have a range of sandwiches, burgers, smoothies, shakes and of course caffeine. We went on a full house day - Sunday, at almost peak hours of 9.45 AM. We had to wait a while to be seated and were given a nice corner stone bench with cushions to the left of the cafe's entrance. We ordered two rounds of the complete English breakfast and some pancakes for Anoushka. Service didn't take too long considering how full the place was. The breakfasts came with two king size sausages, a thick slice of ham, sauteed mushrooms, blanched spinach, baked beans and an egg - sunny side up. This along with two thick slices of white bread and butter. All good and put together a filling breakfast. Junior's pancakes were soft and fluffy and thankfully junior ate them all up. But would have preferred it with the maple syrup rather than honey. I had a banana smoothie which was thick and nice and perfect top up to my breakfast. Husband opted for good old coffee. Overall a nice place for breakfast if you are ready to wait a while and if the kids are not ravenously hungry. It tends to get comfortable here and so getting to your table can take a while with others lounging about. But you will not think much about it once the food is placed before you.

Myilai

"Pull up service a bit and you have a good deal here" 13 Sep 2010
Of all the south Indian cuisines, I personally rank Tamilian as comfort food. The sambhars, the scores of different rasams, the simple way they make their vegetables and the softness to their dosas and idlis are unbeatable. Myilai - a traditional reference to Mylapore is located in Bangalore Central - 2 in J P Nagar. It is a stand alone restaurant at the food court. We went there on a weekend and the place was packed to the brim. It was organized enough and we were seated after around 20 minutes. On first glance, I found the cleanliness levels to be a little questionable. The floor beneath our table was filled with debris from other meals. And it took two rounds of cleaning to get our table good enough for us to sit. As with most new places these days, service on a full house day can be really slack. At Myilai it was 8 on a scale of 10 (10 being the worst). Since we had already looked at the menu while we were waiting, we knew what we wanted. But it took us a good 10 minutes to place our order since nobody seemed to be responding to our calls. Each person pointed vaguely to another. I wanted to have the special Myilai meals, but had to settle for the Executive Lunch since that was all that was available at 2.30 pm. It had a chapathi, sweet, 2 kinds of vegetable gravies, white rice mixed with sambhar, puliogare (tamarind rice) and of course curd rice with a smattering of pomegranate seeds. I really liked my meal. It was perfect for one person. Each of the items tasted homely and I particularly enjoyed the rice and sambhar. Sudhakar decided to have the Rava Masala Dosa which came with another version of sambhar and two chutneys - the coconut one and the tomato-chilli one. The dosa was hot, crisp and along with the chutneys really nice. A friend who was with us and she decided to have a Paper Roast Dosa. This dosa spread halfway across to my place, was crisp and came with the two chutneys and sambhar on the side. The fact that there was complete silence when we were eating except for junior's non-stop chatter meant that the food was good. Anoushka saw a table get served puri and so we had to order one round of Puri and Sagoo (vegetable gravy) for her. The puris were huge, hot and fluffy. Great ones' to pop with your finger. Taste wise I can't really fault the place, but yes, service needs a major overhaul, especially on weekends. There were no spoons on the table, no paper napkins, water was served after 4 requests and refilled only after another 4 requests. The time taken to get food to the table was not too long, but things were literally dumped when they came. A lot of other tables were voicing similar complaints and those who had been served the Myilai special meals had to keep requesting for dishes that were meant to be served without being asked for. Our meal came to around Rs 250.
