If you're a long staying guest in North Goa, chances are you'll start getting a bit tired of the shacks and the 'coolness' of the restaurants offering Italian cuisine & all day English breakfast will start to wane too. This is exactly the time to discover Amigos.
Situated right next to the river under the bridge on the Nerul-Candolim road (AFTER the bridge if you're coming from Candolim and going towards Panjim) Amigos is a bit tricky to get to, but totally worth the effort.
The riverside tables are the perfect setting to while away a lazy afternoon, though the service does tend to get a bit too laidback at times. While the menu offers a variety of dishes (some decidedly too exotic to go with the unpretentious setting!) it’s best to just ask your server for his recommendations.
While the fish special changes with the available catch, ask for the Shark Ambotik (a Goan classic- shark in a sweet and sour pungent curry) or try the calamari, sauted to perfection in a simple butter garlic sauce. And since it also caters to the locals, Amigo also provides a very good, very wholesome fish curry rice plate.
Another Amigo staple is the Kolambi Masala Fry - prawns lightly fried in a delicious masala. There are as many varieties of this one dish as there are restaurants in Goa, with every establishment adding their own little twist to the masala that makes the flavor come alive.
The vegetarian fare is rather basic – so you’ll be happier sticking to the sea!
The great part of Amigos is that it’s good, local food at good, local prices.
Tip: The manager (cum waiter at times) is a young fellow, very fond of rock music, strike up a conversation about Dire Straits, the Doors or Guns’n’Roses and you’ll be guaranteed personal attention for all your visits!
